Why the UAE is powering ahead in the digital race

Anybody who regularly returns to Dubai cannot fail to be impressed by the sheer scale and automation of Dubai’s main airport. This ranges from being told as you are still on the aircraft that your bag will be “available on carousel 5” to presenting your passport via a digital signature on a credit card.

The UAE government is certainly leading the way as it makes real progress with digital transformation online. Of course it really helps that there are two things that are helping with this. Firstly, that there are clear visions and goals with Expo 2020, UAE Vision 2021 and Abu Dhabi vision 2030. Secondly, that there is a large population of “millennials”, the generation born around 2000, who are really driving digital growth through smart phones.

If you work in Media City where Intergence is based, it doesn’t take long to see that there is an explosion in media and digital start-ups. This is being driven by a young generation keen to access everything online from ordering pizza through to online banking.

Anybody who visits the UAE will know that there is a broad choice of banks all offering a wide range of services and many of these are going through a digital transformation process. All of this points to huge opportunities for an advanced digital economy. A recent Accenture report states that digital transformation can boost the UAE economy by around $14 billion by 2020. So what needs to happen to achieve this?

Cloud computing in the UAE has been slower on the uptake than some other economies due to understandable concerns about security and data governance. This has also been the case in Europe, but this is changing and we feel that the same will happen in the UAE. In order to truly deliver an elastic and scalable customer experience, and to enable rapid innovation, cloud computing is the only way to achieve economies of scale and a truly exceptional customer experience.

In addition to cloud computing, IT infrastructure is key to ensuring that companies can really achieve a true digital transformation. This is an area where more needs to be done particularly in understanding where hybrid cloud and hyperconverged computing can deliver the elastic compute requirements for digital. Additionally, being able to control and manage applications and monitor the user experience in real time is a key requirement for a true digital experience. I regularly come across clients who say that they are going through a digital transformation strategy, but have failed to instrument what they are trying to transform. How can you possibly manage any transformation if you cannot measure your progress or the journey of the digital user across your entire infrastructure?
